Twitter user defies courts with new list of superinjunctions

Superinjunction summer
Twitter user defies courts with new list of superinjunctions. Twitter, Superinjunction, Social networks, Data, Tweet, Social networking, Online 0

The Twitter superinjunction controversy continues, with a user, @Legal_AIDS?(aka Sue Mae),?now publishing a document listing no less than 13 people who have had their names kept from the media.

The list appeared on Twitter yesterday and contains court documents, names and in some cases addresses of many who have been granted superinjunctions.?The information was posted only a few hours after Twitter handed over user details to South Tyneside council, who demanded the site released information on an anonymous blogger.?

Once published the list was?immediately?dissipated throughout Twitter, with names being retweeted and shared between users at an incredible rate. By the time the information had been removed it was too late, most of it appearing across multiple blogs and websites, making it very difficult to enforce the superinjunctions.?

In what appears to be a direct statement against the gradual erosion of internet anonymity by the courts, many Twitter users have posted the details simply to make a point.?

Some of the information contained in the list has turned out to be?inaccurate, helping bolster arguments made by those who believe websites like Twitter can damage reputation without reason.

MP John Hemming has been famously outspoken about the matter, stating he will name all celebrities who hold superinjunctions and threaten to "erode British culture," with their anonymity.

Quantum effect transistor is the world's smallest, hopes to make a big impact

What's better than billions of transistors? Billions of miniature two-nanometer ones, leaving room for billions more. A team of researchers accomplished just that, using the quantum effect to shrink these semiconductors -- and set a new size record in the process -- while also managing to keep them operating at room temperature (note: that photo above is from a different team's study). The team of South Korean, Japanese, and British researchers at Chungbuk National University expect them to "enhance the capabilities of mobile electronic devices" -- a mighty vague claim if ever there was one. Not one for modesty, lead researcher Choi Jung-bum proclaims that it "effectively changes the paradigm of such devices." With no word on mass production, though, we'll just have to wait and see for ourselves how big of an impact these lilliputian circuits will have.

[Thanks, Rohit]

Nokia lowers devices and services outlook for Q2, increasingly confident about first Windows Phone in Q4

You know what happens when you tell the world that you're abandoning Symbian for Windows Phone? Right, Symbian sales dry up. No matter how many times you boast about plans to sell an additional 150 million new Symbian devices, and no matter how long you commit to supporting Symbian devices, the OS is essentially dead to developers and consumers alike. So, we're not surprised to hear that Nokia just lowered its devices and services outlook for Q2 of 2011. The updated guidance calls for devices and services net sales to be substantially below the EUR 6.1 billion to EUR 6.6 billion expected in Q2 due to lower than expected average selling prices on lower volumes. It also sees margins drifting below the expected range of 6 percent to 9 percent due to lower than expected net sales -- Nokia expects its non-IFRS operating margin to be "around breakeven." As a result, Nokia is also pulling back its annual targets for 2011 and will provide further updates as its situation becomes more clear.

On the positive side, Nokia does say that it has "increased confidence" that it will ship its first Windows Phone product in Q4 2011. Let's hope so.

Garmin announces redesigned line of eTrex GPS handhelds with enhanced geocaching

Lost hikers and outdoorsmen will soon have yet another arrow to add to their navigational quivers, now that Garmin has decided to upgrade its eTrex line of GPS handhelds. The refresh, announced this morning, will bring three new models to the eTrex family during the third quarter of this year. First up is the eTrex 10 -- a basic, $120 little guy that carries a global database of locations, as well as a monochrome display that can be read under the sun. The $200 eTrex 20, on the other hand, displays images in 65k color on a 2.2-inch screen and can support topographic, roadway and marine maps. At the high end of the spectrum is the eTrex 30 ($300), which offers all the features you'll find on the eTrex 20, plus a tilt-compensated electronic compass, barometric altimeter and wireless data transfer capabilities. All three models allow users to download geocached information directly to their devices and boast a lengthy 25-hour battery life -- giving you plenty of time to find your bearings before calling in the rescue squad. Full PR after the break.

Lady Gaga and Polaroid mash up bears first fruit

And it's a printer....obviously
Lady Gaga and Polaroid mash up bears first fruit. Lady Gaga, Lady Gaga GL10 printer, polaroid, printers 0

Over in Las Vegas at CES we were treated to a sneek peek at the products that would be coming from Polaroid as a result of hiring Lady Gaga as its creative director; the GL30 instant digital camera, the GL20 camera sunglasses, and the GL10 instant mobile photo printer.

And now the first of these products has received an official on-sale announcement - and it's the GL10 printer.

Yes, that's right kids - nothing says Gaga more than a mobile printer, it's all very rock and roll.

On sale from Firebox in the UK (and Bloomingdale's in the States, we hear) the GL10 is a rechargeable printer that connects to your devices via Bluetooth to print off all of those poker face moments.

Your snaps will come out as 3x4-inch sticky-backed images, and you can even personalise the border. With meat flesh presumably, or something even more Ga-garish. You'll get up to 35 on a full charge.

The Polaroid GL10 Instant Mobile Printer will be available from the end of June, priced at ?119.19.

NASA's new cooling pump doesn't need moving parts, set to chill out in space next month

It's pretty easy to cool down an overheating desktop computer with an extra fan, but what do you do if there's no air? That's the hurdle NASA's engineers are hoping to clear with a new prototype pump that the agency unveiled last week. The pinkie-sized instrument relies upon a technology known as electrohydrodynamic (EHD)-based thermal control, which uses electric fields to inject coolant through small vents on a thermal cold plate, before moving the extra heat to a radiator and spreading it far away from any temperature-sensitive areas. With no moving parts, the lightweight cooler uses only about half a watt of power and can be sized to work with small electric components or lab-on-a-chip devices. The challenge is to make sure that the pump can survive the vibrations of a rocket launch, though NASA will put it to the test during a rocket mission on June 9 and in 2013, when an EHD thermal cold plate will be placed on the International Space Station. Start your countdown clock and blast past the break for a full press release.

[Thanks, Kevin]

UK 4G network landing in September

BT and Everything Everywhere team up for trial
UK 4G network landing in September. 4g, phones, mobile phones, LTE, BT, Everything Everywhere, Broadband, Mobile broadband, 0

Big news - the UK's first live 4G network will begin broadcasting in September.

Bad news - it's just a trial for a couple of hundred people in the St Newlyn East area of South Newquay, Cornwall.

But still, it's a start eh? Rome wasn't built in a day.

The trial is a team effort from BT and Everything Everywhere and will use two 10MHz of test 800MHz spectrum, with a view to seeing if it's a viable option for rural areas that are unable to get fast broadband.

The trial area is 25 square kilometres and it's an area that suffers from limited broadband, where up to 700 premises are unable to download a Justin Bieber video as quickly as the rest of us - imagine the horror.

Tom Alexander, CEO of Everything Everywhere, said: "Our ambition is to have the best 4G network and be pioneers in enabling Britain’s superfast wireless future.

"We strongly believe that, by sharing our network and mobile assets in this way, we can make a valuable contribution to the economics of rural broadband services.

"Our work with BT is providing a test bed for new technologies such as 4G LTE which, with the correct allocation of sub 1GHz spectrum from the Government, has the potential to make a real impact on the way in which we communicate in the future."

If you live in the region, and want to take part in the trial then you can sign up at www.4gwirelessbroadbandtrial.co.uk.

Nvidia's Kal-El quad core mobile processor gets video demo

Mobile processor shows graphics that could rival home consoles
Nvidia's Kal-El quad core mobile processor gets video demo. Nvidia, Kal-El, Tegra, Processors, Smartphones, Tablets, 0

For those still showing off their Tegra 2 tech, prepare to have your tech pride squashed somewhat by this demo vid of Nvidia's quad core Kal-El chip.

The "Glowball" video shows the first ever proper dynamic lighting generated by a mobile chip and features graphics that could rival that of Sony`s NGP due out later this year. Included in the demo tech are plentiful shiny surfaces and shadows being cast as well as some clever physics. Things run smoothly most of the time, framerates do however drop dangerously low when the action starts to heat up.?

Nvidia has said that the Kal-El chip should be around five times faster than current Tegra 2 devices and that it can even outpace a Core 2 Duo processor, although which one exactly remains unclear.?Devices rumuored to be using the Kal-El chip include Amazon's Hollywood tablet, details of which are scarce.

The video features a pre production version of the processor that according to Nvidia is 20 to 30 per cent slower than the one which will hit store shelves.?

With all these extra cores being added and Nvidia's plans for even more powerful processors to be released over the next few years, we can't help but be slightly concerned about the hit that devices battery life could take. All this power is in danger of bringing tablets and phones below that sacred nightly charge threshold.

Devices using the Kal-El processor could be due out as early Christmas this year, Nvidia has told technology website CNET.

Exclusive: Appletell interviews Dead Milkmen drummer Dean Sabatino

Section: iTunes, Features, Interviews, Originals

I’m going to be honest with you; I didn’t get the Dead Milkmen right away. My brother did, and he played them relentlessly. It annoyed me. It annoyed me through 1985’s Big Lizard In My Backyard and 1986’s Eat Your Paisley! He then went to college, and I didn’t hear them much again until I saw the video for “Punk Rock Girl” on some Canadian music channel when I was there for spring break in 1988. I found myself missing the Milkmen enough to recommend a friend buy the album. He did. And when I first heard the song “Stuart,” that was the moment when I got the Dead Milkmen.

The Dead Milkmen
Circa 1990: Rodney Linderman, Dave Schulthise, Dean Sabatino and Joe Genaro

They became one of my favorite bands. I appreciated them so much that I enjoyed what they were doing with Soul Rotation, and I proudly state that one of my favorite albums by them is Not Richard But Dick.

The band split up after 1995’s Stoney’s Extra Stout (Pig), and their story seemed to come to a tragic end when bassist Dave Schulthise committed suicide in 2004. But the remaining members never really went away. Drummer Dean Sabatino maintained the band’s website, continuing communication with fans while promoting various solo projects. As such, when they started performing the occasional one-off gig again in 2008, their fans were there waiting for them. The shows were successful enough for them to reform, and in March of this year, they released their first album of new material in 16 years: The King in Yellow.

After buying the album from their website on drop day, it occurred to me how much times have changed. I no longer had to rely on my brother or Canadian television to let me know what bands were up to; I could hear it directly from the drummer. And so, I contacted them to talk to them about this, and Dean Sabatino was kind enough to enter into an e-mail conversation with me.

Appletell: When the Dead Milkmen split up in 1995, I believe Joe said something to the effect of “No one understands us anymore.” 16 years later, do you think people are ready to understand the Dead Milkmen again?

Dean: I think so. In the mid ‘90s we were in the post Reagan/Bush Sr. years, Grunge was about over and the dull music of the late 90’s took over. I think things are back to being as messed up now as they were in the mid ‘80’s when we got started—the economy, the Tea Party idiots, reality TV—so, plenty of topics to write songs about. It’s also interesting to be playing shows again and to see the crowds—a wide range of ages. We have old time fans and new kids as well. It’s been really great.

Appletell: When the Dead Milkmen started performing again around 2008, with Dan Stevens now on bass, was there always an intention to go back into the studio, or was it the success of the shows that pushed you towards recording new material?

Dean: It was not planned. We sort of fell into it. We all had fun at that first show in Austin. It was a collective decision—that, “Hey, this is fun, let’s see what happens next,” kinda thing. We did not pressure ourselves and put a deadline on anything like “The album must be done by this date!” We began writing the spring of 2009 and it was about two years later that The King In Yellow was released.

The King In YellowAppletell: Let’s talk about the album for a minute, then. It’s the first you’ve recorded without original Dead Milkmen bassist Dave Schulthise, who committed suicide in 2004. Considering this, the fact that the opening track on the new album is about a murder/suicide seems a pretty bold move even for the Milkmen, despite no direct reference to Dave in the lyrics.

Dean: There wasn’t a conscience decision to address David’s suicide in any particular way. The title track has more to do with the loose “concept” the album ended up having in which all the songs are related in some way. The song itself “The King In Yellow / William Bloat” was born in rehearsal when we took a bit of song structure that Joe had written and inserted an old Irish murder ballad that Rodney was familiar with in the middle. As Rodney related on our bulletin board a while back, the album begins with a king and ends with a dethroned queen.

Another comment I’ve heard is that the new record if very dark and not as “upbeat” as our older material yet I’ve also heard lots of folks say its great and it fits in with all the older material, like we never stopped. We certainly didn’t set out to write a “heavy” record and I don’t think any of us view it as such.

Appletell: I don’t know if I’d say it’s “heavy,” so much as there are just more songs about murder and fewer about Sha Na Na and mongoose women. But it’s interesting that you’re already hearing fan reaction. Back when Stoney’s Extra Stout (Pig) was released in 1995, the Internet was still more or less in its infancy. Certainly not we’re used to now, in which bands can remain in constant two-way conversation with their fans. Do you think this is a good thing for the Dead Milkmen, or do you prefer the days when concerts were pretty much the only direct fan interaction a band could have.

Dean: I think it is a good thing. You can have a discussion about the show, songs or current events if you want. We have always been pretty approachable. Back in the day we used to send out a snail mail “Newzletter” a few times a year with stories, cartoons, articles and an announcement or two about a tour or LP release. I think we had almost 10K people on our mailing list by the end. The newzletter was a remnant of Joe’s early school project where he created a fictional band called the Dead Milkmen and created a fanzine for a creative writing class. The name existed and the band was born from it. So we have tried to communicate with our fans from the get go.

One of the more humorous recent examples of us communicating with fans is Rodney’s anti vinyl record rants and the back and forth he’s had with our fans on the Milkmen bulletin board. (I’ve largely stayed out of it, but I personally have nothing against vinyl).

Appletell: I’ve read that on the forum, and I’m surprised by some of the “logic” on there…specifically, the “If I can’t buy vinyl I’m going to download it illegally” stance. Where do you weigh in on the convenience of digital releases vs. the potential for illegal downloads?

Dean: Some folks just won’t pay for a digital download. Bands are now putting special packages together for premium prices. We haven’t done that. It was sad to see the new album on the bit-torrent sites within a week of our release. I think the sales loss can be offset somewhat for bands that are touring, etc.

I do like digital releases and buy most of my music that way now. I do still buy CDs once an a while. I think certain fans will still buy it for the liner notes and packaging.

Appletell: The new album was available through your website about a month before it appeared in iTunes. Is there a specific reason for that, or was it a simple of matter of the time it takes to get an album listed in iTunes?

Dean: There was a reason for that. We wanted to offer the new recording just from our website for a month just to get a feel for how it all worked. This way of doing things is all new to us. We only offered it digitally and only as a complete album. Part of this was to raise some funds from sales to be able to then get physical CDs made. After a month we had the artwork done and funds to press up 1,000 discs. We then turned on CD sales, individual track sales,  as well as activated the online sales distribution channels. I have to say that so far working with Nimbit—our online partner who handles the backend for the website shop—has been good.

We were able to turn on iTunes, Amazon, emusic, Rhapsody, and Napster, and only iTunes was active a day or two later—really fast. The others have still not come online [as of the time of this interview]. We’re told it could take weeks and we really won’t know for sure when without manually searching once an a while to see when the new disc comes up.

Appletell: Pretty much your entire catalog is now available in iTunes aside from the albums recorded when you were with Hollywood Records. Have there been any discussions with them regarding making Soul Rotation and Not Richard, But Dick available again digitally?

Dean: I think we’d like to be able to do that someday but we’d have to buy back the rights for those from Hollywood. Some informal conversations have been made over the years but I don’t see it happening unless we really “strike it rich” and can afford to pay them back for the production and marketing costs they incurred when we made those discs.

A gem from the Hollywood Records era.

Appletell: Shifting away from iTunes, then, the members of the band have been active on the web. Of all the accessible web technologies available today—YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, iTunes, etc.—which do you wish you’d had back when the band was coming together in the early ‘80s?

Dean: I sound like an old man when I tell younger bands that they have it easy these days—especially when touring. Our first real tour was the summer of 1985. Dave Blood and I used the “Scene Reports” in the back of Maximum Rock ‘n Roll punk zine to book the two month tour. All we had were a few phone numbers and snail mail addresses to contact mostly kids in towns across the country to try to set up shows that would take us from Philadelphia to California and back again.

We got it more or less booked with lots of holes and hopes of getting more shows along the way. We did make it to California. We spent two weeks on the floor of our manager friend’s aunt’s house in Orange County. Over those two weeks we played four shows and made a grand total of $100 bucks. We had no Internet, no cell phones (does anyone remember pay phones!?!) no laptops, no WiFi, no nuthin!

These days, with the access to information about clubs and email access, the Internet is a great asset to bands. Facebook seems like a pretty good “all-in-one” resource. You can create a fan page, contact your friends and fans, announce gigs and releases and even sell stuff directly there.

That being said, there is a Dead Milkmen page on Facebook but someone else started it a long time ago and we don’t have access to it. It was started by a fan, probably, but I suppose we should see about getting it in our control…

The Dead Milkmen
Circa 2011: Dan Stevens, Dean Sabatino, Joe Genaro, Rodney Linderman

Appletell: The RIAA continues to blame the Internet for slumping music sales, but you’re saying bands can benefit from the tools available to them. Do you think a middle ground can be reached? Should bands and record companies even bother trying to find one?

Dean: I personally think bands should try to do things themselves more and more, but I also understand how handling the business side of things can be a distraction to the creative, making music part of band life. For some, the “getting signed” and working with a record company is still a desired goal. Whatever the path, either the label or the band will need to use these newer technologies.

HTC bows to modder pressure and unlocks bootloaders

Official word from top dog
HTC bows to modder pressure and unlocks bootloaders. phones, mobile phones, htc, 0

HTC modders rejoice for your prayers have been answered by the lord himself.

No, not by God - but by Peter Chou, CEO of HTC, who has confirmed via the medium of Zuckerberg that HTC will be unlocking the bootloaders on the company's phones.

The move comes after HTC decided to shut up the bootloading shop, making modding and rooting devices very difficult, on some of its handsets following pressure from the networks who were scared of the tethering options it offers. It was a move that didn't sit well with the HTC community.

But, fair play to HTC - it has listened to its audience and Chou released a statement saying:

"There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we've listened. Today, I'm confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience."

Even though rooting is now therefore more available then, be aware that there are still some negative consequences to modding your HTC device - a lack of OTA updates for a start. So be sure to check out some of the many rooting forums before messing with your phone's systems.

Still, it's nice to have the option....(Are you reading this Cupertino?)

Phone cameras still have a ways to go to catch up to the awesome capabilities of your standard DSLR, but the handset captured in the image above would certainly get them headed in the right direction. International phone review superstar Eldar Murtazin snapped a few shots of an as-of-yet unnamed HTC device running Windows Phone. It sports a look very similar to the HTC Trophy, although this particular gem is capable of capturing images at 12 megapixel resolution -- comparable to the Nokia N8. We can tell from Eldar's tweets and images, however, that it's gone one step further by adding support for pictures in RAW format. We're still waiting to get more information about this device, but for now we invite you to enjoy the images above and below.

Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3-iSSD Comes with Intel 311 Series SSD Bundled

Gigabyte has been working on the idea of shipping socket LGA1155 motherboards based on Intel Z68 chipset with mSATA slots, to accommodate Intel 311 Series "Larson Creek" cache SSDs that come in mSATA form-factor. The company did release a number of its latest boards with the slot, including GA-Z68XP-UD3, GA-Z68XP-D3, GA-Z68AP-D3 and GA-Z68P-DS3. Now Gigabyte took the idea to its next logical step, bundling an Intel 311 Series 20 GB SSD with the motherboard (since consumers might find mSATA SSDs at little hard to find in the market). The small SSD serves as a high-speed cache which comes into use when Intel Smart Response acceleration is enabled.

The GA-Z68XP-UD3-iSSD is a variant of the GA-Z68XP-UD3, with the "-iSSD" suffix denoting the bundled SSD. The board comes with the 20 GB mSATA SSD pre-installed into its slot. That aside, the GA-Z68XP-UD3-iSSD is a fairly straightforward Z68 implementation, with 7-phase CPU VRM, dual-channel DDR3-2133 MHz memory support by overclocking, two PCI-Express 2.0 x16 (x8/x8 with both populated) supporting SLI and CrossFireX; four SATA 6 Gb/s, four 3 Gb/s ports; HDMI 1.4a display output, Lucid Virtu support, 8-channel HD audio, four USB 3.0 ports, and FireWire.

(PR) Having Sold 30 Million Units, Renesas To Double Production of USB 3.0 Chips

Renesas Electronics today announced that the cumulative total shipment of the company's SuperSpeed Universal Serial Bus (USB 3.0) host controllers has reached 30 million units worldwide as of 19 May 2011. This achievement comes a year and a half after starting mass production of the world's first USB host controller (µPD720200) in September 2009. The company also announced that to further address increasing orders from customers, it plans to double production of USB 3.0 host controllers to a monthly production of six million units starting this June.

In May 2009, Renesas Electronics (then NEC Electronics) introduced the industry's first USB 3.0 xHCI host controller and, after four months of its release, the company became the world's first to earn the "Certified SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.0)" certification from the USB-IF, and also started mass production of the µPD720200 host controller. In the following year, the company released its second USB 3.0 xHCI host controller (µPD720200A) and passed the compliance and certification testing in only two months. These host controllers have become the de facto USB 3.0 host controller standard realising the best interoperability between PCs and PC peripherals that support USB 3.0.

As well a plethora of rugged checkboxes; super long 13.5 hour battery life (with hot swapping extension option too), low reflection ratio touchscreen for bright areas, tough magnesium alloy casing, anti-scratch coasting, MIL-STD drop tested and water, dust, vibration and temperature protection packed; it also achieves an impressive IP65, MIL STD 810G rating.

Plus the hardware is none too shabby either, with the latest Intel i5 chip inside, along with AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics in the top model, with Intel HD 3000 graphics across the range and usable in the "Performance" model as well to save battery.

It also boasts a military standard "Concealed Mode" and the fan, backlight, status LEDs, speakers and communication models can all be switched off in an instant.

Finally it packs a 13.1-inch? XGA display, an Ericsson F5521gw HSPA+ (DL: 21 Mbps) module, 4 USB ports, a HDMI port, a card reader, a fingerprint reader, GPS and webcam.

Put short, if Rambo needed a laptop - he'd buy this one.

It's not cheap, of course - prices start at €3,699. It's out in June.

Icebreaker Hockey hits the ice June 2nd

Section: iPhone / iPod touch / iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, iDevice Apps

Vancouver is on its way to the Stanley Cup Finals, and that’s likely as it should be. After tonight, we’ll know if either Boston or Tampa Bay will be joining them for game one on June 1st. The following day, hockey will be joining your iPhone via Icebreaker Hockey from NaturalMotion Games, publisher of the million-selling Backbreaker franchise.

Icebreaker Hockey

Icebreaker Hockey is an action hockey game that will see you deke, spin, skate, and score against defenders via both on-screen buttons and the accelerometer. The game features Game Center support with leaderboards and unlockable achievements as you play as one of eight original teams (in other words, not as the Canucks, Bruins, or other NHL teams).

Icebreaker Hockey uses morpheme, NaturalMotion’s graphically authorable animation engine, to deliver the highest quality animation to the iPhone and iPad. Shooting original motion capture on the ice with professional players, Icebreaker Hockey showcases a realistic fluidity of motion to rival console quality. Paired with a 3D arena setting complete with OpenGL 2.0 effects, ice reflections, advanced shading, ice spray, and more, players will be immersed in the environment and feel like they’re actually out on the ice.

Developed by Digital Legends Entertainment, Icebreaker Hockey will be available in the App Store June 2, 2011 for $2.99.

Opera 11.10 gets HTML5 File API support, IMAP improvements

opera 11.10
The crew in Oslo keeps plugging away at Opera 11.10, and the latest snapshot build includes a number of improvements to Opera's built-in email client -- as well as HTML5-related additions.

On the IMAP front, Opera now supports special folders like sent items, spam, and trash. It also better handles duplicate items in Gmail -- such as those which appear in all mail and under your custom labels.

Opera 11.10 now partially supports the HTML5 File API as well, which means your favorite Web apps (like Gmail) may soon begin adding Opera to the list of supported browsers.

You can download the latest Opera 11.10 snapshot for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the official release post.

Update: The Opera 11.10 RC is now available, as pointed out by SlashZaku in the comments. Thanks!
