(PR) Sapphire Announces New HD 6970 Graphics Card with Dual-BIOS and Dual-Fan Cooling

SAPPHIRE Technology has just announced a new model in its successful HD 6900 series of graphics cards - the HD 6970 2GB with a new super efficient Dual fan cooler and Dual BIOS giving users the choice of fast, quiet operation or performance tuning.

The new SAPPHIRE HD 6970 has the same internal architecture as the standard model, with 1536 stream processors and 96 texture processing units, and clock speeds are 880MHz for the core and 1375Mhz (5.5Gb/sec effective) for the 2GB of GDDR5 memory. This new design has two 90mm fans with thin impellers that can move the same amount of air at 10% lower rotation speeds than conventional fans, keeping noise low, and their special dust repelling bearings contribute to high reliability.

A great success

The TiVo team over at Virgin Media is engaging in some serious fist pumping and back slapping, and why the heck not? After all, the cable giant has just announced that, in the first 3 months of the mass availability of the service, its engineers have been installing TiVo systems at a rate of one a minute.

That rate means a total of 222,000 homes now have Virgin Media TiVo being piped into their telly boxes and also means that the total number of users?quadrupled in the 3-month period.

Virgin Media has also been asking its customers about its viewing habits and has found that a third said they’re watching more TV as a result of their TiVo boxes and half?think they’re watching better quality programmes.

80 per cent of users said that TiVo gives them "more freedom to watch more TV when they want to watch it" with half of people stating "they watch more catch-up TV than ever".

Virgin Media's appeal also grew recently when it was announced that it had struck a deal with Sky to allow its customers access to the satellite broadcaster's content on demand, without the need for a Sky subscription.

HP keeping PC division after all

Verdict still out on webOS

HP today announced that it has completed its evaluation of strategic alternatives for its Personal Systems Group (PSG) and has decided the unit will remain part of the company after all.

“HP objectively evaluated the strategic, financial and operational impact of spinning off PSG. It’s clear after our analysis that keeping PSG within HP is right for customers and partners, right for shareholders, and right for employees,” said Meg Whitman, the new HP president and chief executive officer. “HP is committed to PSG, and together we are stronger.”

The move comes after a shock announcement in August where the company, then commanded under a different CEO, said that it might sell off the popular and profitable division that looks after PCs, laptops, smartphones, and tablets.

The decision by CEO Whitman is understandable. HP is the number one manufacturer of personal computers in the world with revenues totaling $40.7 billion in 2010.

“As part of HP, PSG will continue to give customers and partners the advantages of product innovation and global scale across the industry’s broadest portfolio of PCs, workstations and more,” said Todd Bradley, executive vice president, Personal Systems Group, HP. “We intend to make the leading PC business in the world even better.”

As for webOS, Whitman and Bradley have said that HP has yet to make a final decision as to the fate of the operating system.

According to the pair, the company will make a decision in the next couple of months.

LG Optimus Android Gingerbread update lands

Three handsets to receive 2.3

LG has finally brought Android Gingerbread 2.3 to its range of Optimus handsets; the new version of the operating system replaces Android Froyo and? will be rolling out to three handsets during the November.

After the initial three, more premium handsets have received the update, a full global rollout of Android Gingerbread should follow.

LG said that it "would like to express its sincere thanks to all of the Optimus Series owners who have been waiting patiently for the Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade. We are excited by the high level of product interest that LG Optimus Series owners have shown, and we are taking all possible measures to offer a smooth OS upgrade in a timely manner."

The LG Optimus 2X update is available now (1 November) for open models in Europe, whilst the LG Optimus 3D will begin getting its update to Gingerbread from 21 November, this too only applying to open models in Europe. Finally, open models of the LG Optimus Black will begin receiving the update on 28 November in Europe.

Although this news will be welcome by LG Optimus users, they may well feel that they're still a little off the pace when it comes to updates as Android Ice Cream Sandwich has only very recently launched; further highlighting the lack cohesiveness within Android.

LG says, in light of the delay, that it will "try and provide better service in the future".

R&D: Future Computers Could Be Powered By Living Gut Bugs

Boffins at Imperial College London have been researching the use of bacteria to create standard logic gates such as AND, NOR & NOT to construct a living computer with. They have actually created working prototypes that give the correct logical outputs for the corresponding inputs. The bacteria used was the common E. coli found in the gut and as typical food poisoning in a meal from a bad restaurant.

The scientists have also shown that these gates can be connected together combinatorialy, to provide complex logic functions, something that's critical to building any kind of digital circuit that is to have a useful function, such as a processor, no matter how simple. This original work, published in Nature magazine is worded in highly technical scientific language and is not easily understandable by us mere untrained mortals. GPU Shipments Increase 16.7% in Q3, 18.4% Year over Year

The latest data from Jon Peddie Research, which is known for closely tracking the PC graphics hardware industry, claims that the PC graphics industry has stabilized and returned to a more predictable path in Q3 2011. Shipments have increased 16.7% sequentially, and 18.4% compared to Q3 2010 (year over year). Much of this is attributed to the market success of Intel "Sandy Bridge" Core processors, which has also worked to increase Intel's market share. Intel is the market leader in PC graphics, with AMD in the second place, and NVIDIA third.

Intel holds 60.4% of the market, a significant increase from the 54.8% it held in Q2 2011. It grew at the expense of both AMD and NVIDIA. AMD's share slipped a little, despite the introduction of new A-Series "Llano" accelerated processing units. AMD holds 23% of the market, down from the 24.4% it held in Q2. NVIDIA is in a bit of trouble. The green team holds 16.1% of the market, down from 20.1% it held in Q2. This is attributed to its exit from integrated graphics. Its discrete GPU business still sees growth.
