As (eventually) expected, Amazon’s Cloud Player finally works with iOS devices when accessed through Safari web browser. While the service gives a warning that the browser is not supported, the functionality seems to be flawless. How long will it take for Apple to respond with their own music in the cloud service?
The newly found “support” for iOS was discovered by TechCrunch. It’s interesting that Amazon didn’t announce this themeselves; perhaps they’re waiting to release a native app for iOS. The Amazon Cloud Player still warns you that your browser is not supported, but it clearly is, given that music pauses when your device receives a notification or phone call.
If you’re not familiar with Amazon’s Cloud Player, it’s essentially a hard drive in the sky that’s very good at playing music. You get 5GB of space for free, with options for obtaining more storage space. The best part is that you can upload any music from your personal library. The record companies don’t have to back it, because it’s just a hard drive in the sky.
Apple is expected to have a similar service in the works, with two notable differences: Apple’s cloud music service will more than likely have the backing of music labels, and it will obviously work flawlessly with iOS. It’s doubtful you care what the record label thinks, but full iOS support is always a good thing.
