How cluttered is your desktop?

Section: Features, Opinions and Editorials

AppStorm’s David Appleyard says he has something of a clutter-free desktop compulsion, and can’t bear to have more than a couple of icons on his desktop at any time. He allows that, at least for him, there’s something about having icons, folders and files stored away rather than on display that offers a simpler and more enjoyable working environment.

Appleyard acknowledges that not everyone thinks that way, noting that every time he logs on to his parents’ Mac, he’s greeted by countless swathes of icons cluttering the desktop, an eclectic selection ranging from old application volumes to family photos.

David would be aghast at My Mac’s desktop, which typically has maybe 100 (or more by times; 98, not counting Dock items in the random screenshot) various icons scattered about.

Since my earliest days on the Mac. I’ve used the Desktop as a, well, desktop, and the physical desktop in my office is, if anything, even more cluttered than the virtual desktop on my Macs. Here’s an unretouched example.

In my defence, let me say there is order of sorts in this apparent chaos, and, in fact, I know at least roughly where everything is and can lay hands (or cursor) on whatever I’m looking for much more quickly and efficiently than I could if it was all organized and tucked away neatly and tidily. My office, which looks like a bomb went off in it some days, dismays my wife, but then you should see the Desktop on her Mac.

I did have to chuckle at the range of multiple-choice options David Appleyard included in his “What’s on your desktop?” poll, which are:

  • Nothing!
  • Just my mounted drive(s)
  • Fewer than 5
  • More than 10 items!

Ten items?! Not even close on the best days, unless I’ve just initialized a fresh drive. I have the Desktop configured as the initial destination folder for downloads in all my browsers and the save location for new documents in all applications, using it as sort of a central clearing house for subsequent filing to archive or the Trash. I also keep all work in progress on the Desktop, albeit with some organization in folders. I appreciate that this sort of Desktop usage results in some degree of hardware performance degradation as the Finder works to keep up, but on the balance I’ve found it a worthwhile trade-off for my particular style of workflow.

How about you? Neat freak or desktop clutter?
