Here’s our monthly summary of NetMarketShare’s Operating System Total Market Share rundown of the significant players for May 2011 (April ‘11 figures in parentheses), tracking changes over the past month. In summary, Windows slipped a bit more this month but still accounts for nealy 90% of OS installs. The Mac OS also fell back a bit, while the main story is across-the-board gains for mobile systems. The iOS now enjoys 2.38% of the overall OS market, while desktop Linux drifted back to .91 share and Android trails at 0.76 percent.

Operating System Versions
In terms of OS specific versions, evolution remains sluggish in the Windows world, as Windows XP and Vista continue their glacially slow fade; XP is now down to a 52.41% share (but still way out in front interms of raw numbers of users by a vast margin), while Windows 7 continues to grow share. Apple’s OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard at 20 months since its release in August, 2009, is by far the most prolific Mac OS version, with more than eight times OS X v10.4 Tiger’s receding user share (Tiger has begun to slide again after holding steady over the previous two monthsstark contrast with Windows, whose OS X v10.4 contemporary, Windows XP, as noted, is still by far the most prolific version in the Windows space. iOS (iPod, iPad, and iPod versions collectively) has decidedly nailed down its solid second place in the Apple OS spectrum for the sixth consecutive month, now at 2.39% share. JavaME pulls farther ahead of Linux, which seems stalled at less than one percent market penetration.

Browser Share
Turning to browsers, Internet Explorer lost a smidge more share on the month while Firefox gained slightly, but was still under 22%. Chrome growth has resumed its meteoric rise after taking a rest in April, topping 12% share for the first time last month. Safari was alsoup significantly on the month, the second greatest gainer. The innovative Opera rounded out the top five again, share virtually unchanged (no doubt hoping that its new streamlined Opera Next feature will help grow some share) while Opera Mini posted a small gain and remained in sixth place overall in its own right. The recently discontinued social networking browser Flock remains ahead of the Linux Konqueror browser.
