Google Latitude check-in deals now available across the US

Recently, Google has been busy beefing up Latitude to make it more competitive with other location apps -- and more fun to use. Location history was added recently, iOS users can post check-ins via Latitude, and now Google has begun rolling out location-based deals which are tied to the service.

If you're in the U.S., you can now score local savings at participating merchants by checking in with Latitude. Google will also be offering "status deals," which users can unlock by visiting a particular merchant on a regular basis. Mashable notes three status levels: regular, VIP, and guru -- though partners can apparently customize those titles if they choose.

Right now deals are available from merchants like American Eagle Outfitters, Arby's, Finish Line, Macy's, Quiznos, and RadioShack.

Dropbox for Teams offers businesses copious amounts of sharable storage

Dropbox for Teams
Dropbox is an indispensable part of many a computer users' arsenal, including several here at Engadget. But, the company hasn't had a viable option for businesses who would have an obvious use for a tool that allows you to easily sync files between PCs, share them amongst users and always have backups in the cloud. The boys and girls at the Y Combinator startup know that there's lots of money to be made in the enterprise space and that's why they've unveiled Dropbox for Teams. The general experience is the same, but rather than individually managed chunks of storage, teams share one large repository, starting at 1TB for five users. The base plan costs $795 a year and additional users, which also includes 200GB of storage, can be tacked on for $125 annually. The business offering also includes special tools for administrators to add or delete users and dedicated phone support. Check out the full PR after the break.

Adblock Plus developer pokes holes in Mozilla's new add-on performance tests

Wladimir Palant, developer of the most popular add-on in the world, Adblock Plus, is also an active contributor to the Planet Mozilla blog community. Over the last few days, in response to Mozilla's new name and shame list of slow add-ons, Palant has been investigating whether Mozilla's testing methods are actually accurate.

Rather surprisingly, it turns out that Mozilla's numbers could be significantly wrong -- and if they're not wrong, the factors that Mozilla uses to tabulate an add-ons final score should definitely be made more transparent.

In the first set of tests, Palant shows that FlashGot's position in the top 10 is probably due to a fault in Mozilla's testing setup, and that add-ons can perform very differently depending on which operating system they're being tested on. In the second analysis, Palant uncovers an irregularity that doesn't seem to have an obvious cause -- but it could be due to an I/O bottleneck on Mozilla's test machines. Basically, even though performance testing of Read It Later is disabled because of a bug, it still (somehow!) manages to record a 14% slow-down on Windows 7.

Palant concludes both analyses by scolding Mozilla for going public with the performance data before its testing methods had been confirmed accurate. It definitely looks like Mozilla has been more than a little reckless, considering the importance of Firefox's add-on ecosystem.

Samsung promises flexible OLED screen phones for 2012

Bendy and trendy
Samsung promises flexible OLED screen phones for 2012

Samsung is to introduce flexible screen phones next year, presumably for the South Korean market first. The company has also said that it plans to introduce the technology to tablets and other portable devices.

Pocket-lint played with the Nokia bendable handset concept at Nokia World earlier this week, but Samsung has revealed that it will be bringing similar tech to market in 2012: "The flexible display, we are looking to introduce sometime in 2012, hopefully the earlier part," said vice president Robert Yi, while explaining that the company's overall profit fell 23 per cent in the last year, thanks mainly to the chip and display sectors.

"The?application?probably will start from the handset side," he added.

Bendy Super-AMOLED displays have been on the agenda for some time, with Samsung showing off its technology this time last year.

It exhibited a?4.5-inch flexible Super-AMOLED display at the FPD International Expo in Tokyo in November 2011, which also boasted a WVGA resolution of?800 x 480. That particular sample can be rolled into a tube 1cm in radius.

Of course, the challenges will be where to put the battery, SIM slot, antenna, processor and the rest of the gubbins, but this is the clearest indication that those particular issues have already been addressed.

Windows 8 Secure Boot: Handy Malware Backdoor for Nosy Governments?

We've written before how Microsoft's new secure boot feature in Windows 8 could likely be used to shut out competition and create the ultimate in walled garden consumer lock-ins something that is very undesirable from a competition, price and consumer choice viewpoint. However, it now appears that governments could lean on Microsoft in order to install secret snooping malware on user's PCs.

Ross Anderson, professor of Security Engineering at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory, has written in the Light Blue Touchpaper blog, about this issue. He starts off by explaining how secure boot could limit the purchase Metro apps to only the official Microsoft app store, saying. "Even if users can opt out, most of them won't. That's a lot of firms suddenly finding Steve Ballmer's boot on their jugular." That sounds very well put and really doesn't paint a pretty picture, does it? It's exactly the same tactic as all these firms that require you to opt out of receiving their junk mail, toolbars etc when installing software, knowing full well that the majority won't.

Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 710 leak

Nokia World announcements early?
Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 710 leak. Phones, Nokia, Nokia Lumia 800, Nokia Lumia 710, Windows Phone 7 0

With just hours to go before Nokia World kicks off in London, two documents detailing the two phones the Finnish company is expected to launch have leaked on the Internet.

The Nokia Lumia 800?and the Nokia Lumia 710 will be, according to Winrumours.com, the new names for the new Windows Phone 7 smartphones from Nokia.

The Nokia Lumia 800 is?expected to be the official name for the previously dubbed “Sea Ray”. That name?has already turned up thanks to?leaked photos from the camera on Flickr.?The spy shots show that the phone will measure 116.5 x 61.2 x 121mm and weight 142g. it will have 512MB of RAM and of course as with all Windows Phone 7 handsets not sport a micro SD card. Talk time is supposedly 5 hours on 3G and you'll get 50 hours of music playback. Idle time is around 380 - 390 hours. Other Nokia Lumia 800 specs aren't given.

The Nokia Lumia 710 is expected to be the official name of the phone that has been doing the rounds in the rumourmill as the Nokia Sabre. The spy shot of the Nokai Lumia 710 suggests a size of 119 x 62 x 12.5mm, 512 RAM, 8GB of storage. Sadly the details about talk time are too blurry to make out.?Other Nokia Lumia 710 specs aren't given.

Judging by the pictures, the Nokia Lumia 800 will be a reworking of the Nokia N9 with Windows Phone 7 buttons, while the Lumia 710 will sport a slightly different, less design focused feel.

According to Winrumours, the new phones will be available in November.

PlayStation Vita Flash free for launch

No Adobe love from the off
Sony: We're phasing out feature phones

Don't expect any Flash based fun on your Sony PlayStation Vita if you grab one at launch, Adobe's much derided platform will not be supported.

There is cookie, JavaScript 1.7 and HTML5 support though, proving that the device will be equipped for web-based shenanigans, but Flash isn't part of the launch plans.

If you remember, Flash wasn't present when the PSP first launched; a software update brought it along after a year or so, although the version added was very basic and way behind the desktop client.

But times have changed for Adobe's ageing software and the PSP update was a long time before Steve Jobs and co. put the boot in on Flash and the HTML5 revolution kicked-off, so it will be interesting to see if Sony bothers to add support down the line.

Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation Vita will go on sale in Japan on 17 December with pre-orders already open. The console costs 24,980 yen (?206) for the Wi-Fi only version, or 29,980 yen (?247) for the 3G one.

As well as the official launch date, Sony also confirmed 26 launch titles for the handheld console and stated that a further 74 will follow after that.

In the UK, Amazon has the handheld console priced up at ?229.99 for the Wi-Fi only version, and ?50 more if you want 3G too, but there's no official launch date yet.
