When you think of skins for your various electronic devices, SkinIt likely comes to mind first. They’re the ones with those somewhat obnoxious TV ads, after all. But they’re also the ones with all of the franchises. They’ve got football, baseball, basketball, hockey. They’ve got some of these at the professional and collegiate level.
They’ve also got Disney films and characters, your country’s flag, fashion, a few bands, political themes, religious themes, and plenty more. Chances are, if it’s a sticker you’d put on your school notebook, it’s a SkinIt skin you can put on your iPad.
But selection isn’t everything. As I’ve mentioned in my other skins reviews, you need to worry about quality and fit. With both of these, SkinIt does a solid job. The fit is almost edge-to-edge, with a bit more left off at the corners than I would’ve expected (although it does mostly prevent bunching up).
The only issue I had with the fit is that the cutout for the headphone wasn’t quite far enough to the right. This didn’t affect performance at all, but after perfectly aligning all of the other important areas (volume buttons and screen lock, dock, speaker opening, camera, etc.) the headphone was off by maybe 1/32 of an inch…just enough for the right side of it to sit on top the black headphone port.
SkinIt uses a flat 3M Scotchprint paper, providing no texture at all. As a result, fingerprints will show up easily on the glossy finish, and bubbles can be hard to work out. After application, I was able to push most of them out by swiping from the center to the edge with a cleaning cloth, but one troublesome bubble wouldn’t leave, and I had to lift that area and reapply the skin in order to get rid of it. Thankfully, removing the skin for realignment isn’t an issue. I really do wish they would provide a cutout for the Apple logo, however, as they do (did?) on their MacBook models.
Of the multiple skin manufacturers out there, the feel and texture of SkinIt’s prints aren’t my favorite. But you simply can’t argue with their wealth of design options, especially considering that most of them are very good. They could’ve been lazy with your favorite hockey team’s logo, for example, but they’ve actually got some good artwork to go along with it in most casesincluding some rather surprising options…
Add the Minnesota North Stars to the mix, and I’d buy one for every device I own. In the meantime, you should just consider buying one for your iPad 2. The desgins are great, the scratch protection is solid, and although the fit could use some adjustments, it’s fine where it matters. SkinIt is the reason you buy skins in the first place.
