This is the final weekend before Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference kicks off in San Francisco, and before Steve Jobs maps out Apple’s intentions for the following year. As always, rumors have been rampant, with talk of iOS 5, Mac OS X v10.7 Lion, and the mysterious iCloud leading the way. As we head towards our WWDC 2011 live blog, you can take this opportunity to catch up what we can expect to see unveiled.
- Rumor: Mac OS X 10.7 Lion will include “Find My Mac” - There have been many reports recently about stolen Macbooks recovered through a variety of means, such as third-party software, using the built-in camera, accessing it through the Internet, and others. While you can use Find My iPhone to find your iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch there hasn’t been a way to easily do that with your laptop…until now. Actually, until WWDC, when we find out if this is really going to make its way to Mac OS X 10.7.
- Apple to announce iOS 5, Mac OS X Lion and iCloud June 6th - For those who are still having doubts about Apple’s plan of coming out with a cloud service, time to erase those doubts. Come Monday, Apple will officially announce their cloud service, now officially called iCloud. Unfortunately, that’s all Apple wants us to know for now right now. But to keep us all excited, Apple is also announcing two more important products: iOS 5 and Mac OS X Lion.
- Latest Snow Leopard build prepares Mac App Store for Lion - Apple has recently released its third build of Mac OS X v10.6.8 to developers, asking them to focus on testing graphics drivers, VPN, QuickTime, networking, AirPort, and, most importantly, the Mac App Store. The release notes for the newest build state it aims to “enhance the Mac App Store to get your Mac ready to upgrade to Mac OS X Lion,” potentially meaning that Apple is planning to deliver Mac OS X Lion through the Mac App Store as well as through physical copies.
- MacBook Air price drop; refresh on the way? - An upcoming refresh to the MacBook Air line-up is looking like a possibility, as Apple has just dropped its prices on its refurbished Air models last night, with the base model now starting at only $829 USD, a drop of $30. Although not a significant price drop, it could very well mean that Apple is hoping to clear out its inventory ahead of a refresh.
- Rumor: Photo of possible next gen iPhone back cover leaked - Apple.Pro has published a leaked image of what the source (which appears to be microblogging site Weibo) claims is the back cover of the upcoming next generation iPhone.
- What iCloud and iTunes can do for each other - Last month, Appletell reported that Apple Computer likely bought the iCloud domain name and that it probably would be used for an iTunes music streaming service. Now, we have a lot more information about how iTunes and iCloud can work together and why it will be to your advantage; especially if you use an iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
- Planning a MacBook Air purchase? Best wait a few weeks - According to Taiwanese IT industry watching site Digitimes’s Yen-Shyang Hwang, Yenting Chen, and Adam Hwang, the Taiwan-based supply chain for Apple products will begin shipping refreshed 11.6” and 13.3” MacBook Air models featuring Sandy Bridge Core “i” CPU silicon and supporting the Thunderbolt I/O interface in late May for launch in June or July.
- Possible next gen iPhone case pulled from trading website - A case supposedly created for the upcoming next-generation iPhone has gained some popularity and caused some hype after it was listed on an online trading web site called Alibaba. A similar situation occurred on Alibaba prior to the launch of the iPad 2, with cases being listed that included hints to the iDevice?s new features, and which were subsequently taken down thanks to Apple?s legal team. Since the new case (pictured above) brought quite a bit of attention to its manufacturer, it is likely that either they or Apple had it taken down this time around.
- Over the air iOS updates coming with iOS 5? - Wouldn?t you like to be able to apply Apple?s latest iOS updates to your iDevice without plugging it into your computer and waiting? Of course you would, and if 9to5Mac is correct, that?s just what Apple intends to do starting with iOS 5. You?d still have to apply that last iOS update to 5 the old fashion way though.
- Mac OS X v10.7 will be sold on the Mac App Store - Mac OS X v10.7 Lion will be released this Summer. And instead of having to go to a store to buy your copy or wait for the DVD to come in the mail, you will be able to use the Mac App Store to purchase and download it instead. For those without broadband, who are still using Mac OS X v10.6 or lower, or who just don’t want to download Lion, there will be a way to get it with the traditional optical disc.
- Rumor: iPhone 5 prototype running test version of iOS previewed - A source which has been reliable in the past for showing off Apple prototypes before announcement or releasesuch as with the iPhone 4, MacBook, and the 4th generation iPod touch with the camera additionhas released two interesting videos of what is apparently the next-generation iPhone running a test build of the next major release of iOS.
- Rumor: iOS 5 not due for release until fall - If rumors are to be believed, then Apple’s usual schedule for iOS updates will be somewhat upset this time around. Word on the net is that iOS 5 has not been discussed publicly by Apple yet because the planned release date is not summer, as usual, but fall. The reason? iOS 5 is supposed to be a “major revamp of the software.” This would explain the notable absence of an iOS special event at Apple. The first preview may be held during WWDC.
