A mobile version of iMovie has been available for the iPhone 4 since its launch, but today, Apple brought the hugely popular video editing tool to the iPad. It appears to be a very similar experience to that found on the iPhone 4, but the bigger display means you can see more of what you’re working on, and the controls look to be more refined.
In the new version of iMovie for the iPad, Apple has taken a lot of care when it comes to audio, with over 50 sound effects at your disposal. The screen set up also looks more similar to the full version of iMovie, with the project material in the top left-hand corner, a preview window opposite, with the editing area taking up the bottom-half of the display. From what we can see, the 9.7-inch display gives you more accuracy and control over the editing, and along with some brand new themes, it looks like a very solid application. As long as you have all the footage you require on your iPad, there’s no real reason why you couldn’t do a very decent editing job on the move—and that’s saying a lot about the power available in the iPad 2 with its brand new dual-core A5 chip.
There is now also the ability to send your video across the Internet in record time, with options to send your completed film to YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo and CNN iReport from within the application itself. You can also, of course, just send the video to iTunes in full, high definition. Well, we wouldn’t expect anything less from Apple, would we? And thanks to the updates to iOS 4.3, you can stream straight to your Apple TV via AirPlay.
iMovie for iPad will be available alongside the brand new iPad 2 in the App Store on March 11 for a very reasonable $4.99. You’d be crazy not to give it a go.
