The problem with covering your iPhone is that you’re covering your iPhone. Apple’s industrial design is one of its great strengths, making striking products that look like minimalist works of art. At the same time, the iPhone is an expensive piece of electronics that has glass on both sides. So, finding a case that can protect the iPhone and be just as attractive is a problem.

Mivizu seeks to crack this nut with a simply designed leather case, the Sleek. The leather (in various colors and textures) is built over a plastic shell with “shock absorbing cell bumpers” to help absorb shock if you drop it.

The design works like this: you snap (not slide) the iPhone 4 into the case, which holds it securely—so securely, in fact, that getting it out of the case is a bit of a struggle. The ports and buttons are all open, except for the iPhone connector port, which is covered by the flap that covers the screen.

It’s the design of the flap that creates problems for the Sleek case. If you fold it back, it covers the camera lens, making it unusual. If you don’t fold it back, it doubles the length of the case, making the iPhone awkward to hold and use. The hook (which latches the cover to the top of the phone) also makes the iPhone uncomfortable to hold when using it for landscape gaming.

The Mivizu sleek is an attractive case in a variety of styles. Its wraparound style provides almost complete protection in your pocket. But when you take it out to use it, the problematic design of the cover flap makes it unwieldy to use. Also, while it’s available in a variety of colors and styles, it only comes in one or two colors in each style.
