Here is our monthly summary of NetMarketShare’s Operating System Total Market Share rundown of the significant players for February, 2011 (January ‘11 figures in parentheses) tracking changes over the the past month.
After dropping below the psychologically significant level of 90 percent share for the first time in a very long time last month, Windows remained almost completey static in February, dropping a ststistically insignificant further hundredth of a point, while the Mac OS dropped .06 of a point over the month. The iOS’s share was also down a substantial .24, after several months of steady gains, and JavaME took back fourth place from Linux which dropped a further .03 below one percent. Android also consolidated its hold on 6th place, gaining .03 on the month.

Operating System Versions
In terms of OS specific versions, Windows XP and Vista continue their glacially slow fade, with XP now well below 60 per cent share (albeit still in front in raw numbers of users by a yawning margin). Windows 7 continues to grow share. Apple’s OS 10.6 Snow Leopard at 17 months since its release in August, 2009 is by far the most prolific Mac OS version, with more than eight times OS 10.4 Tiger’s receding user share (Tiger continues to hold on, however, losing another .03 last monthstark contrast with Windows, whose OS 10.4 contemporary Windows XP, as noted, is still by far the most prolific version in the Windows space. iOS (iPod, iPad, and iPod versions collectively) dropped back a bit but sustained its solid second place in the Apple OS spectrum for the third consecutive month. JavaME is now ahead of Linux, whcih remains stalled at less than one percent market penetration.

Browser Share
Turning to browsers, Internet Explorer clawed its way back on the moth while Firefox remained near-static, now under 23 percent, although the anticipated release of the final version of Firefox 4 should turn that around. Chrome was once again the biggest gainer among the major browsers in January, pulling farther above 10 percent and now holding just about half the share Firefox does. Safari was also up slightjy. Opera rounded out the top five again, although it slipped back, but Opera Mini posted a healthy gain to remain in sixth place. Konqueror stayed static in seventh.
