Xtreme Mac’s Tuffwrap Shine is different from its Thin Sleeve brother in three crucial ways: 1.) it protects just the back of the iPad, 2.) it does not work with Apple’s Smart Cover, and 3.) it comes in not only black, but also frosted clear and pink varieties.

XtremeMac Tuffwrap Shine

The Tuffwrap is a skin-type cover that snaps over the back and sides of the iPad; its high friction rubber provides protection for key switches and a better gripping surface than the iPad’s smooth aluminum back. Vital ports are still open for business, including the dock connector, headphone jack, microphone, and camera.

In addition to the enhanced grip the Tuffwrap provides moderately louder sound due to passive amplification from the cutout surrounding the speaker. The case is easy to snap on and off, should removal be necessary, but this easy movability proves to be the Tuffwrap’s biggest drawback as well.

In regular use, due to the iPad 2’s rounded back edge, it is all too easy to snap the side of the case away from the iPad’s bezel. This reduces the holdability of the iPad, and necessitates fidgety adjustments several times during use to put the Tuffwrap back where it needs to be.

A case with a more rigid bezel might be more difficult to apply, but would be more usable given the iPad’s new curved backside.
