It's that day of the week again, and here is an update with all of the latest bits of news and community activity that's been going on since July 17th. We've got stories from social networks, blogs, video websites and news networks all here, and the only thing you need to go to see them is to hit the break below. If you have stories you'd like to share with the webOS community next week, send an email to tim@precentral.net and we'll add it in!
Latest News
- The first week of the official hard launch of the HP TouchPad has come and gone, and we have some nice things to show for it. More advertising has been revealed on various TV networks with celebrities like Lea Michelle from Glee and a new bit from Russell Brand, plus some coverage in the late night sector with both Fallon and Leno. The increase in the number of ads and public chatter of the device plays right into the hands of regional retailers as well, who have joined the likes of Amazon and Costco is bringing incentives for you to buy the HP tablet device.
- We've seen some long-awaited app updates hit the catalog as well; the HP Movie Store and Amazon Kindle app both went fully live from their previous dormant states in the app launcher. Feeder, a popular RSS feed reader for webOS smartphones, also got a nice update to bring it to the big screen. Plus it looks like there might be a new Amazon Cloud media player coming to the TouchPad in the future. If you were wondering if more developers were going to be bringing their apps to the TouchPad, have no fear - Box.net is pushing a contest to give away $35,000 in cash prizes, plus 10 HP TouchPads and other cool bits, for building an application that ties into their services.
Around the Web
- HP is still filing for more trademarks to use in future products, and our own Jonathan Ezor has grabbed some of the latest to share: Connects Like Nothing Else, Surfs Like Nothing Else, Reads Like Nothing Else, Rocks Like Nothing Else, HP Pre and HP 12C (which is a bit different than the others, so it grabbed our attention quickly). Could these be related to the other six filings that we told you about last month?
- Stephen Dewitt has been in a number of interviews lately, but that's not stopping him from showing in a few more. This latest one with the Senior VP of the webOS GBU has taken him to the Fox Business Network, the same program that interviewed Richard Kerris not long ago. There's not much new said here, though, but check it out if you're interested.
- HP has been found promoting more than just a few trends on Twitter; now they're promoting search results as well. This latest one shows up when you do a search for #webOS: "What’s that sweet sound? It’s #BeatsAudio on the new #HP #TouchPad! http://bit.ly/pjFKmN #webOS." Not bad, though it would be nice if more than a few people had retweeted it.
- If you're looking for another perspective of webOS from an outsider, it doesn't get much better than looking at what an Android-fan experienced. Bryan Leasot has sent out a message to share what Geek.com writer Russell Holly wrote about his 60 days using the Palm Pre Plus, and it's a good read.
- For media fans and owners of the HP TouchPad, a new app called KalemSoft Media Player has been released that should fit your fancy to watch videos from a larger variety of file formats than the default movie player allows. damienh has told us about the app in the forums, but you can grab it from the app catalog on your TouchPad at any time.
