Angry Birds PSA advert spoof will have you reaching for your wallet

Daffy Duck and Miss Piggy not happy
Angry Birds PSA advert spoof will have you reaching for your wallet

Angry Birds is getting so popular it's starting to affect animated stars like Roadrunner, Woody the Woodpecker and Big Bird, or so this public service announcement would have us believe.?

"Now is the time to break down the barriers between us," says Big Bird in the College Humour spoof that also features a Disney version of Piglet from Winnie-the-Pooh and Donald Duck.?

It's all in aid of helping those affected by the "Angry Birds war that to date has seen 1 billion young birds and pigs losing their lives in the conflict."

How can you help? But donating money, of course, to help those affected by the conflict; allowing birds to learn how to fly and pigs to be re-homed in Farmville instead.

Harrowing and tear jerking, for sure; but remember now is the time to "give these pigs and birds a replay at 3 star lives," as Roadrunner?poignantly?says at the end of the 2 minute commercial.

As the slogan at the end says "Make Love Not Omelettes."

Survival Lab is a fun pixelated game where dying doesn't matter

Survival Lab
In most games, dying is a bad thing. You have to start all over again, or at least revert to the last save point and lose some progress. Not so in Survival Lab: in this pixelated gem you play as a lone individual pitted against ruthless weapons in a sealed chamber. You have to run, jump and duck, collecting little yellow things (I have no idea what they're called).

For each donut-like yellow thing you pick up, you gain a bit of experience. If you manage to collect several in a row without getting hit, this counts as a combo. You can see my mad combo skills in the screenshot, of course. Collecting combos is a good thing, because a ten-point combo gives you for more experience than just collecting ten dounts one by one (getting hit in-between).

Having experience is useful, because once you die, you get to a screen where you can upgrade your skills. You can learn to run faster, double-jump (and then double-jump higher), and duck. You can also gain more armour so that getting hit won't kill you so quickly.

What makes this simple game so addictive is that when you die, your experience doesn't reset. You just go back to the same level, or another level of your choosing, and keep accumulating more and more experience. Lots of fun, especially if you're into the whole retro-gaming thing.

LogMeIn has added Android mobile viewer support to its free screen-sharing tool join.me, which allows you to share what’s on your screen with whomever you like. So you can still talk your team through that crucial end of year presentation, if that's the type of thing you have to do.

The free version of join.me allows up to 250 people to join an online meeting through a simple-to-use web portal. The join.me mobile viewer app for Android is free to download.

When on the join.me site, a quick click of the share button will produce a pin that you can then use to connect your Android device (once you've downloaded the join.me mobile viewer app) to any meeting you are hoping to be part of.

The release says it will be available for smartphones and tablets across Android OS 2.1 and 2.2, but the video is showing it working on Android 3.0.

LifeProof Cases announces snow, dirt, water, shock proof case

Section:

LifeProof casesA new case company, LifeProof Cases, has officially launched with a few new cases for Apple products. While their iPhone 4 cases are currently only available for pre-order at a $69.95 price point (it doesn’t appear as if the iPhone 3G/3GS or iPad cases are available yet), I was lucky enough to meet with these guys at Macworld this year to check out their product. While the concept is similar to that of the Ballistic case we reviewed, LifeProof’s case seems to be a much better attempt. It promises to “life proof” your iPhone from water, dirt, snow, and shock, and does so without the bulk of other ultra protective cases I’ve tried.

While it remains to be seen whether these claims are true, the pre-release unit they showed me at Macworld appeared to be quite solid. It was slim enough that I would actually consider using it as an everyday case instead of just at times when I needed extra protection: when hiking and such. However, I also felt it would protect my phone as they said it would after watching videos of LifeProof’s CEO swimming with his phone and throwing all kinds of sand and mud on it and still having it work fine.

I’m sure we’ll be seeing many cases from this company in the future, and I look forward to them.

Cyrus Streamline hands-on

All-in-one, high-end streaming
Cyrus Streamline hands-on

High-end audio specialist Cyrus has introduced a new range of streaming products including the all-in-one Streamline. We went along to the Bristol-based Sound & Vision Show 2011 to get a closer look.

There are three models to choose from in the range, but priced at ?1,600, the Streamline is the most affordable by far, although you will need to shell out extra for some loudspeakers to go with it. Based on the same platform as the flagship Stream XP, the unit itself is very compact and the brushed metal finish gives it a premium look. Equipped with a 2 x 30W power amp, the Streamline has everything you need to stream music wirelessly around your home from a NAS drive (with the addition of some speakers, of course). If the built-in power amp doesn't offer enough juice for you then the product offers the flexibility of adding more powerful amps.

As well as looking slick, the Streamline is very easy to use and also has a USB port so that you can hook up an iPod or portable storage device. There's also an Ethernet port in case you prefer a wired connection. Cyrus recommends streaming WAV files for the best results, as there are uncompressed so you shouldn't lose any audio quality along the way.

The Streamline uses the brand's n-remote network-enabled handset control. This two-way remote makes it easy to browse through your music library using the screen, and it also has infra-red learning capabilities to that it can be used for other products as well.

It was a little hard to test out properly, as the remote was mounted on a large, wedge-shaped display block at the show (presumably to stop it from going walkabout). However, it was clear that the remote is a fairly hefty beast with the large display making it quite long. The buttons felt a little strange, although we were assured that this would be rectified on the final retail version. Apart from those issues, the remote was very easy to use and made it a breeze to navigate around the music library.

The audio quality that we heard from the Streamline was very impressive, although obviously this is going to be affected by your choice of loudspeaker

The Cyrus Streamline is due out in mid-March and will set you back ?1,600.

Sony Vaio L all-in-one PC launches with "Edge Access" control

Available in May
Sony Vaio L all-in-one PC launches with

Sony has announced its new Vaio L series all-in-one multimedia PC, which the company hopes will become the centre of your family's multimedia world.

In the hope you'll make the Sony Vaio L series all-in-one PC a sort of multimedia focal point in your home, Sony has made it pretty slim along with, "a space-saving design featuring a glossy black finish, with the tilt-adjustable ‘floating’ display resting on a sleek V-shaped stand".

The screen consists of a 24-inch Full HD display with LED backlight, and should be ample for everyone to crowd round to view photos or video from your latest holiday.

However, it's main innovation is the introduction of an interactive bezal, which is basically an extension of the touchscreen, but with specific points along the edge performing specific functions. You'll be able to open and scrol through files zoom and rotate images with intuitive fingertip gestures… and no mouse or menus needed.

"Touching the VAIO logo in the top corner of the bezel launches Media Gallery - the intuitive way to browse and enjoy your collection of photos, videos and music. Other touch-sensitive regions of the bezel let you navigate or zoom documents and web pages, flick between on-screen windows, launch an on-screen ‘virtual’ keyboard or view a handy operation guide. There’s also an illuminated Sony logo on the bezel that dims at a touch for comfortable viewing in darkened rooms".

The meat of the device consists of an Intel Core i7 or i5 processor, which should give plenty of grunt for dealing with the majority of your media, and it also sports Nvidia with DX11 support for any HD video you want to play.

There's also the option for Blu-ray disc writer allowing you to create, edit and store HD content with up to 50GB of storage on a single Blu-ray Disc. Whilst the S-Force Front Surround 3D should complement this.

Wireless data transfers are accelerated by Bluetooth 3.0, while SuperSpeed USB 3.0 boosts file transfer speeds by up to ten times compared with USB 2.0.

The Sony all-in-one 24-inch VAIO L Series multimedia PC should be available from early May 2011, though no word on pricing.

HTC Merge first hands-on! (video)

HTC just rolled in to set up for our San Francisco reader meetup tonight, and what's this? They brought a brand-new HTC Merge with them. No one's talking about what carrier this interesting Android slider is going to launch on yet, but that Verizon-red earpiece and search button aren't exactly coy. Apart from that, it's pretty much exactly the device we've seen leaked all over for months now -- a really nice landscape Android slider with a solid keyboard. More pics in the gallery, and a video after the break!

Android Market now offers e-book purchases

There were some interesting discoveries noted when the Android Market website went live recently. Specific URLs behaved differently than the categories listed on the site -- they ended with books, music, and movies. Now, TechCrunch reports that the Books subsection is active. Right now, however, the Books tab will only appear for users who access the it via the Market App on an Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet.

Books are categorized, and top paid, top free, and recently added titles are also on display. Pick a title you want to download, and it's added to your Google Books account. You don't need to own a tablet to make a purchase, so we expect the Books tab to appear soon on non-Honeycomb devices and in the Web Market as well. Complete a purchase, and it's instantly available via the Google Books app.

Books could, of course, already be purchased from http://books.google.com/ebooks, but the Android Market will provide a good deal of additional exposure and plenty of new customers.
