Free apps roundup for March 18th, 2011

Section: iPhone / iPod touch / iPad, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, iDevice Apps, Originals

TWCable TV

This week on the Free Apps Roundup: Watch live TV on your iPad (as long as you’re a Time Warner Cable subscriber and have WiFi access), updates to Google Search and Adobe’s Photoshop Express, get the next best thing to an official Facebook app for iPad, track your loved ones with Footprints, and grab some limited time game freebies before they fade into the ether.

  • TWCable TV - If you’re a Time Warner Cable subscriber, now you can watch select live cable channels on your iPad. The service has been very popular, so the number of channels may fluctuate. The quality of the video is quite good, but the app is only useful if you’re on WiFi.
  • Google Search - Google just pushed a major update to their search app for iPhone including fast app switching and more. If you don’t already use this app, you should. You can search by text like you’re used to, or try speaking what you want, or even taking a picture! It’s pretty awesome.
  • Footprints - Ever wanted to automatically share your location with someone in real time? This app does just that. But unlike Foursquare and the like, it keeps it private. Your location is only shared with those you choose to share it with. Plus, it all happens in the background without draining your battery like constant GPS would. It’s the perfect app to keep track of kids or your friends or whoever.
  • Friendly Facebook for iPad - Why doesn’t Facebook have an app for iPad? That’s probably the first thing a large portion of new iPad users ask themselves. It probably has something to do with how Facebook feels that viewing their site in Safari.app is sufficient, but it seems like a missed opportunity to me. Never fear, Friendly is a pretty good replacement until Facebook gets their act together. You can do just about everything you’d want to do like browse your Facebook feed and photos in full screen, upload and download photos, and more.
  • Fotolr Photo Studio - Another photo processing app, but this one’s free. It comes with 22 functions that should be pretty useful for just about everyone. If Camera.app isn’t cutting it for you, give this a try to give your photos that extra something.
  • FreeScore - When’s the last time you checked your credit score? Yeah, I can’t remember either. This app helps you check it with the 3 major credit bureaus.
  • Adobe Photoshop Express - It’s not brand new, but Adobe just pushed a significant update for Photoshop Express. The camera workflow has been optimized and now you can buy the Camera Pack for additional camera features.
  • KartRider Rush - It looks to be an awesome kart racer for iPhone that’s somehow free. It has several modes and even supports multiplayer, but only locally. It’s apparently super popular in Korea already.
  • Nota - There are enough guitar chord apps floating around, how about a piano chord browser? This app will help you find chords and scales and it’ll even quiz you on music basics. It’s a beautifully designed app that’s part game and certainly won’t be free for long.
  • Fingerzilla - Here’s your chance to live out your dream of being godzilla. Your only task it to rain destruction complete with cheezy sound effects. If you act quickly, you’ll get the standard 7 levels for free. And if you really like it, you can buy some more levels.
  • Uber Race 3D - Sandstorm - This game was supposed to be free for one day only, but they let it go a little longer, so get to it. The graphics look great in this racing game that spans 10 different environments with 12 cars. Plus, it’s universal, so you can enjoy it on your shiny new iPad 2 as well.
  • Dark Nebula Episode 2 - The sequel to Dark Nebula. This game has you tilting your iDevice to control the disk that represents you. It’s like a labyrinth game, but with danger. You’ll have to avoid falling off of obstacles and enemies trying to kill you. The first title was quite fun, so grab this one this weekend while it’s free.
