Free apps update for December 17th, 2010

Section: iPhone / iPod touch / iPad, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, iDevice Apps, Originals

Word LensThis week on the App Store there are a ton more games, but that’s not all. I also found a number of great utilities: more location tracking, a translator from the future and a great news app. And, as always, a decent number of these are limited time freebies. Grab ‘em while they’re free.

  • Word Lens - Definitely the coolest app that you’ll see today.  This app is somewhere between augmented and replaced reality.  It’ll take the video feed from your iPhone’s camera and replace any Spanish text with the English translation sans internet connection.  It just does it on the fly.  I just can’t wait for them to add more languages.  It’s like the beginning of the future…
  • Google Latitude - Just what you needed, another location sharing service, right?  Well, Google just couldn’t resist.  With Google Latitude, you can keep track of your friends who are using the service and hopefully notice that you’re close to them and plan to meet up on a whim.  Your location can be updated continuously to whomever your choose.  That’s super useful if you want someone to know where you are, but don’t necessarily want to directly tell them or take out your phone.  All of this can happen in the background, but remember that location services tend to drain your battery, so use with caution.
  • CNN App for iPad - The best way to experience CNN on your iPad.  This app supports live breaking news videos streaming right to your screen.  If that’s not enough, you can dive deeper and explore your news.  Stories can be shared via Facebook, Twitter or good old email.  You can even save stories for later when you don’t have an internet connection.
  • Parsec - An “old-school shoot’em up” type of game.  You’re an arrow in space firing your lasers at colorful enemies.  The graphics are simple, but clean and enjoyable.  It supports Game Center and is a universal app.  Just remember, Parsec is a measurement of distance, not speed.  So Han Solo was more bragging about his piloting abilities around a cluster of black holes than the speed of the Millennium Falcon.
  • SCRABBLE Free - Not to be outdone by Words With Friends, EA has released their own free version of everyone’s favorite crossword derivative.  You’ll be able to play against your friends on Facebook, random opponents or even against a real person in real life.  Basically, as long as you have friends or want to play against strangers online, you’re good to go here.
  • Flight Control Free - Now you can play the ever-popular Flight Control app without paying for it.  Well, there’s no such thing as a free lunch, so you’ll have to deal with some ads, but hey, there aren’t any TSA scanners.  Direct traffic just like they do at the airports, with your fingertips.  It’s kind of funny to see just how much of a graphic difference there is between this and Firemint’s other popular game, Real Racing.
  • Google Voice - While not a brand new app, Google has updated their Voice app to support both the iPod touch and iPad.  It’s not universal, but you can use it pretty much anywhere now.
  • iDrumStarLite - Another drum app.  This one has a clean and realistic interface with 2 drum sets: Rock and Hip Hop.  If you really dig it, you can buy some more drum sets in the app, but there’s probably enough here to keep your fingers tapping away for a while.
  • CollegeHumor - Your portal to CollegeHumor’s amazing collection of content.  If you’re looking for a good time, you could do a lot worse than this.
  • Plane Finder AR Free - A very interesting app that augments your reality via your iPhone’s camera, GPS and compass.  If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to see planes flying by on your camera and have them labeled.  Pretty nifty.
  • Rack Stare - It’s easier if I just say it, this game challenges you to stare at a, well, rack, without getting caught.  If you get caught, you’ll get slapped.  If you don’t, you’ll get points and, according to the developer, increased health.  Apparently, this sort of thing is good for you.
  • Remote HD Lite - Free for a limited time, this is a remote app that gives you a customized interface for every app it supports.  It’s a great middle ground between Apple’s own Remote.app and a full VNC client.  You’ll have to install a small remote helper app on your computer to get this to work, and then you’ll be able to control a number of popular applications.
  • Battle Bears -1 - This may or may not be free by the time you read this, but Battle Bears is such a great line of games that it deserves mention anyway.  You play a bear who needs to kill other colorful bears that want to hug him to death.  It’s strangely addicting.  Trust me.
  • Pocket Chef - A 3D cooking game not unlike Cooking Mama.  There are 25 recipes to master across 5 different kitchens.  Plus there are 19 mini games.  All for free, but only today.
