HTC Android 2.3 Gingerbread update on its way

HTC confirms rumours to Pocket-lint
HTC Android 2.3 Gingerbread update on its way

The web is going crazy with HTC Android 2.3 stories this morning, thanks to the appearance of a few (blurry) pictures of an US HTC Evo 4G running Gingerbread.

However, this is just a port of the software (and an unstable one at that) created by third-party developers, who are hard at work cooking their own ROM for public consumption. It is not anything to do with HTC, or any official announcement.

How do we know at Pocket-lint? We asked HTC directly:

“We are excited about the OS update coming for Android", a spokesperson for the manufacturer exclusively told us. "And while HTC will definitely have some phones running this OS, we do not have a specific timeframe for new phones or updates at this time. Please stay tuned for more details”.

So, should you see cunning pictures of a HTC handset running a version of Android 2.3, it will no doubt be powered by a hacked port of the OS, rather than an official one.

There. We're glad that's cleared up.

By the way, for those foolhardy enough to attempt to install the buggy OS build (and you'll need a HTC Evo 4G that runs on Sprint), you can get the software from a number of sources. But it's extremely inadvisable at present, unless you really know what you're doing. Don't say we didn't warn you.
