The Academy awards, better known as the Oscars thanks to the famous golden statuettes, is THE event in the Hollywood calendar and have been all over the news again since the nominations were recently unveiled. And this year, the awards have even got their very own official app for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
We all think we know who should scoop which Oscar, so why not make a competition out of it? This app enables you to make your own predictions and compete with your friends. You can share your picks through Facebook, Twitter, text and email, while real-time scoring lets you see how many points you've managed to rack up against your group of pals and the rest of the community. The app includes a handy list of all the nominees for the 2011 awards, separated by categories. If you haven't heard of some of the slightly more obscure contenders then don't panic as there's a brief synopsis for each as well as access to the relevant film's trailer.
Along with making predictions for the current year, the app also opens up the The Academy's vaults in the form of a database of all the Oscar winners since the first ceremony in 1929 (including the awards that were given for films from 1927 and 1928 as well). An essential point of reference for film buffs and pub quiz cheats, the database can be searched by either award category or by decade.
