Toshiba Tablet teaser gets snarky with iOS device users

How’s this for a lesson in corporate thinking? Toshiba, like many computer manufacturers, is going to enter the tablet market this year, and to that end have created a teaser site for the Android-based device. And the teaser site is written entirely in Flash. Okay, fine. Since this is for a device that isn’t available yet, maybe they figure people will be visiting it on their laptop or desktop computer, and most of those have Flash. But they also included a snarky little message for users of iOS devices:

Such a shame. Add this to the list of interesting places on the Internet you can?t see on your device. Of course, if you had a Toshiba Tablet, you would enjoy the entire Internet. Yep, Flash sites too.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting, because as John Gruber pointed out earlier today, if you removed “apple.html” from the mobile URL, you got a web page designed in HTML5 that worked on iOS just fine. I know, I saw it this afternoon.

But it’s gone now. Visiting the mobile version of the site returns a 403 Forbidden error, which means that Toshiba decided their snarky little message to Apple users was more important than the rather cool-looking HTML5 that some programmer put so much work into.

So, is this going to be the decisive battle? Are Android tablet and phone makers going to go back to making everything in Flash in an effort to hurt Apple’s business? Will they support HTML5 as well?
