iPhone Appidemic: Special Force Gun Battle

Special Force: Gun Battle from Mobicle just hit iTunes for iPhone. This game is fresh out of the oven, and promises a unique puzzle gaming experience with a nod to first person shooter fun.

Special Force Gun Battle

What is it?

I found out pretty quickly that Gun Battle is a puzzle game in the truest sense, with a disassembled gun serving as your puzzle. You get a gun, in pieces, along with a time limit to put it together. There are 24 different firearms to learn, including the Aug Steryr and AK-47, and plenty of other hand cannons made famous by FPS games. Everything from hand guns to sniper guns find their way to you in pieces. The thing is, you don?t just fail if you don?t get the gun into firing condition in time—you die. And you don?t just get a gold star for getting it done right, either—you get to shoot your opponent in the face. The game?s best feature is its ability to compete with other random players. It has an algorithm that matched me with other players of my same rank and skill (there are 21 total ranks) to keep the matches challenging.

How does it work?

The controls are pretty simple and let you get the hang of what?s required quickly, which is good since the game’s premise itself is so challenging and high-tension. The last thing I want to do while sweating over being shot in the face is try and learn counter-intuitive over complex controls. Gun Battle has that figured out, and it?s a one-touch, tap-to-rotate, slide to place system. Like a lot of great puzzle game designs, Gun Battle is focused on the time limit and the challenge of the puzzle itself, not complex controls.  It?s a good choice by the game makers.

Is it contagious?

Gun Battle has three big things going for it.  One, adrenaline.  This is a seriously heart-pumping game, which surprised me a little?I didn?t expect a puzzle game to be this much of a rush.  But the homage to FPS games really comes through, and that?s number…  Two, it?s a puzzle game that appeals to you if you like shooting games.  There are plenty of shooters that incorporate puzzles, but this is one of the first I?ve seen of puzzlers that feature authentic guns.  And three, the competition.  This is one of those games that I can almost guarantee will become a leaderboard favorite because it fosters such direct competition. Anyone who doesn?t like this game probably isn?t entertained by any of the above, or just doesn?t have an interest in the premise, which is fine. There are plenty of puzzlers out there for those who?d rather deal with neon cartoons instead of cold hard steel.

The music is well designed to enhance the high-tension feel of the game, and I can?t fault the graphics either.  Each weapon is well represented, identifiable as its type, and authentic with accurate assembly methods.  For the price, Gun Battle is definitely worth it, and there is also a lite version as well.
