AT&T subscribers can thank competition with the Verizon iPhone for a plethora of improvements, including unlimited mobile to any mobile carrier, 1,000 free rollover minutes, and now an extra 2GB of bandwidth for the DataPro tethering plan. There’s still no personal hotspot feature support, but that’s more Apple’s fault than anything else. We’ll see what happens when iOS 4.3 makes in onto our iPhones.
If you already pay for the DataPro tethering plan, you’ve likely received the text message in the screen cap above. I think it’s interesting that AT&T had such an easy time doubling bandwidth at no cost to the end user. All it took was a little competition. Makes you wonder what else they’re overcharging you for (Hint: nearly everything). It’s too bad AT&T didn’t feel it necessary to do this sort of thing before any other carriers in the U.S. offered the iPhone. Nevertheless, it’s good to see that they have responded to competition, because I honestly could have seen them simply ignoring it.
Now, AT&T, how about you make an announcement that you’ll be supporting the personal hotspot feature when available?
