Casio Pro Trek PRW-5000T: time to explore

SNOW WEEK: Solar powered, radio controlled watch
Casio Pro Trek PRW-5000T: time to explore

The Casio Pro Trek line of watches offers outdoor lovers the sort of looks that could set you back much more. The Pro Trek doesn’t scrimp on features however, as its onboard sensors will give you access to a range of data to guide you in your outdoor pursuits.?

The PRW-5000T is not only tough, offering scratch resistant glass, resistance to temperatures down to -10 and 100m waterproofing, but it is also solar powered, with the background of the watch face being a solar cell.

Round the right-hand side of the watch you’ll find three big buttons - big enough to press when wearing gloves - offering access to the compass, barometer and altimeter, all ideal for those heading into the mountains, without wanting to forego those cool apre-ski looks.

At the press of one of these buttons, you’ll be delivered the information via the? small digital display, the second hand motoring around to indicate that you’ve selected one of these functions.

Beneath the screen is an “adjust” button, which in these modes offers an alternative view; the compass offering compass points as well as bearings in degrees, the barometer offering barometric pressure and temperature. You’ll also be able to set zero, so you can trace changes, for example press and hold in the altimeter function and you’ll be able to glance at the second hand to see if you’ve gained or lost altitude.

Elsewhere you get the regular functions you’d expect from a Casio watch, including stopwatch, timer, alarms and so on. Travellers might be happy to the world time offering, providing 29 labelled locations on the dial so you can change the digital display to reflect an alternative location.

Accuracy isn’t a problem thanks to the radio time reception, accepting signals to make sure your watch always shows the right time. No need to worry about missing that alarm when the clocks change.

Despite the chunky looks, the PRW-5000T isn’t that heavy, but it is large. The metal strap offers a dual-clasp mechanism that means it won’t come undone on the ski lift.

At ?320 the Casio Pro Trek PRW-5000T is a little more expensive than your average G-Shock, but we love the classy looks.

Macworld 2011: The Omni Group?s show floor presence

Section: Apple News, Conferences, Macworld, iPhone / iPod touch / iPad, iPad, iDevice Apps, Macintosh / Apple Hardware, Discontinued Products, Software, Mac Software, Business / Office Suites, Originals

The Omni Group

Even if you’re from outside of the productivity space, you’ve probably heard of The Omni Group. With applications like OmniGraffle and OmniFocus, The Omni Group offers software to suit almost every productivity need you may have. And this year at Macworld, they’ve shown up big. With a large showcase booth on the floor, The Omni Group has iPads and Macs displaying some of their awesome work in the Mac/iPhone/iPad development space. There are people buzzing all over trying to see how OMNI can help them become more efficient.

Omni Group Macworld

I had the opportunity to chat with Ken Case, CEO of the Omni Group, about some of the products they’ve launched recently and how they’re doing. If you’ve been in the Mac App Store recently, you’ll notice that the Omni Group has 3 of the top 10 spots on the Top Paid charts for the Business category. They’ve also been doing very well with their iPad apps, which are what Ken spent most of the time showing me. In fact, of all the apps he showed me on the iPad (OmniGraffle for flowcharts, OmniGraphSketcher for graphs, and OmniFocus for tasks), I couldn’t decide which one looked best. The company’s attention to detail and interface was quite impressive, and the developers have definitely mastered the use of Apple’s UI elements. Ken tells me that about 80-90% of the features you’d get in the desktop versions are on the iPad versions as well, which is quite impressive in and of itself.

Oh, and for the OmniOutliner crowd, don’t worry. I’m told (and have seen) that OmniOutliner is currently under development for the iPad and will be out within a few months. And it looks just as great as the other three.

Look for some upcoming reviews from Appletell of these products.

What is MWC?

A beginner's guide to the annual mobile phone expo
MWC explained

You might have noticed that we recently started bleating on about something called MWC 2011. There's little doubt that if you know your Android from your iOS then you'll be only too familiar with what we're going on about. However, if you're a recent convert to the world of technological geekery or you're simply confused by one abbreviation too many, then we probably owe you a few words of explanation.

MWC stands for Mobile World Congress and is the biggest event of the year in the mobile tech calendar. Organised by the GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association), it's the largest exhibition for the mobile industry and is where the networks, retailers, manufacturers and journalists from all over the world come together for an annual pow-wow to see what's on the agenda for the coming year.

The show always takes place in February, with MWC 2011 running from 14 to 17 February. The starting date of Valentine's Day will no doubt leave many attendees in the doghouse for choosing to spend time with a bunch of mobile phones rather than their loved one - or are they one and the same?

The exhibition first started in 1987 and up until a few years ago - 2006, to be precise -? it took place in Cannes, but the show has since moved to a new home in Barcelona, Spain. With a whopping 365,000m2 of floor space, the Fira de Barcelona is one of the biggest event venues in Europe and MWC is the largest exhibition that it hosts.

As well as a conference and plenty of keynote speeches and press events, MWC is also the place where most of the major manufacturers showcase their new mobile products for the coming year, allowing us to get some hands-on time with the new phones. The show also now incorporates a spin-off exhibition called App Planet which was visited by more than 6,000 app developers in 2010 and is set to be even bigger this year, with more exhibitors having signed up. Last year's MWC saw more than 49,000 attendees overall, including 2,400 journalists, representing 192 countries from around the world.

Some of the big exhibitions in the tech calendar, such as the Berlin-based IFA show, let the general public in to get up close and personal with the gadgets. However, MWC guards its wares much more closely, so unless you're a journalist or you work in the mobile industry then you won't make it though the door.

With the exception of Apple, which always does its own thing when it comes to exhibitions and product launches, all the big players of the mobile industry will be attending the show, so you can expect to see the latest news from the likes of HTC, Samsung, LG, and Motorola. It seems that Nokia will be attending, despite internet rumours that it wouldn't be taking part in the show this year. As well as the handset makers, the show will also play host to chipset manufacturers, such as Qualcomm, who are responsible for the technical wizardry under the chassis of your mobile, along with content providers, app developers and just about every other company under the sun that has anything to do with mobile technology.

Even if you haven't heard of MWC before, you've probably heard of many of the products that have made their debut there including the HTC Desire, HTC Legend and Samsung Wave, which were all unveiled at the 2010 show. We're also expecting plenty of hot product launches at MWC 2011, not least the Sony Ericsson PlayStation phone.

Team Pocket-lint will be travelling to MWC 2011 in Barcelona to bring you the latest tech stories. Armed with our technical expertise along with cameras, notepads, laptops and extensive caffeine supplies, we'll be storming the show floor to get up close and personal with as many of the new products as we can possibly get our paws on.

Picture the scene. It’s late. Your eyelids are getting heavy. The pitter-patter of the rain on your windscreen starts to swim into the sound of talk radio as you watch the white lines on the motorway disappear under your car one after the other.

You have to send a jolt through your own body to stop yourself going into microsleep. It’s time to give up on your all-night drive and admit defeat. But where are you? Where can you stay? Do you really want to spend the night in your cold Cortina? Of course not! That's the moment you reach for your smartphone glad that you had the foresight to download...

Here

Developed by Fujitsu and Grapple Mobile, this cross platform mobile phone hotel booker will sort you out in a jiffy. It’s pretty simple stuff but what you get is a location aware, quick access way of finding out where your nearest Permier Inn bed is. It covers all 590 of the chain’s location as well as one touch access to calling ahead or, if you prefer, a large button called Book.

You get details of prices and offers as well as all the options you’d be after including whether or not you want breakfast. There’s even a tonne of FAQs just in case you want to know what time you have to check out or whether or not the rooms are fitted with a Corby trouser press.

Other than that, it’s more a question of convenience than anything else. There is a button to take you to a map of where the hotel you’ve chosen is but what it doesn’t do at the moment is tie into your phone’s navigational system which is a bit of a shame. That said, it does what it says on the tin and if you spend a lot of time on the road or miss your last train once too often, then it’s worth a space on your app screen.

Humax HD-Fox T2 TV Portal 1.02.03 Firmware Beta hands-on

HDR-Fox T2 update on way too
Humax HD-Fox T2 TV Portal 1.02.03 Firmware Beta hands-on

Pocket-lint has managed to get its hands on a pre-release (beta) version of the forthcoming firmware update for the Humax HD-Fox T2 (which will also arrive for the HDR-Fox T2) and has had a play with the company's brand spanking new TV Portal feature. Through it, the Freeview HD set-top-box gains access to Internet content, such as BBC iPlayer, Sky Player and Wikipedia.

The patch essentially allows the Humax STB to convert any regular set to a Smart TV, as long as the box is connected to the Internet via an Ethernet cable or an external, Humax-branded Wi-Fi dongle - support for which also comes with this patch. It's highly probable that owners will have done this already though, as it has doubled as a DLNA-friendly multi-media streamer for some time.

A recent over-the-air official update already brought recording functionality to the box, when connected to a USB memory stick or external hard drive (obviously the PVR version, HDR-Fox T2 didn't need this upgrade) but it was the 'net content portal that customers have been yearning for since the release of the box back in the summer of 2010.

The beta version of 1.02.03 should in no way be considered the final build, but it does offer five different applications at this time. A press of the previously-unused TV Portal button on the remote control brings up a menu screen featuring access to BBC iPlayer, Sky Player, Internet Radio (which we suspect was built by Humax itself) Wikipededia via the Wiki@TV app, and Flickr. More are on their way, and Humax has plans to expand as agreements are struck. Perhaps even before the new firmware is made public.

Anybody who's used BBC iPlayer on TV equivalent services, such as Samsung's Internet@TV, will recognise the app here instantly. It's identical to the front end used by the corporation on a swathe of different devices, and it's welcome to see HD content sit alongside standard definition video in this instance.

On Ethernet, everything starts and streams nigh-on instantly, high-def or no, but we didn't have a dongle to hand (oo-er missus) to check out the Wi-Fi option.

Sky Player is similar, and runs in much the same way as it does on numerous other platforms. Of course, there's no HD content, and it can cost a fair penny if you don't already subscribe to Sky. But those who do will be pleased to get the service in another format and room.

Wiki@TV is fairly basic, to be honest. While it gives the raw information from Wikipedia on a subject you've searched for, there's not much else to it. And, on the beta version of the software at least, it looks a bit clunky.

Flickr is better presented and is, again, in much the same format as on connected TVs and other devices. You can search and look at pictures - handy if you keep your holiday snaps on the online service.

But it's the Internet Radio portal that we're, strangely, most impressed by. Simple, clean design and an extensive list of stations is all we really need, and we can see that this might get more use that any of the rest of the initial TV Portal apps, even though it's not actually TV as such.

As well as access to Internet content, the 1.02.03 brings with it a few fixes, including a resolution for an issue with audio drop out on HD programmes, and HDMI to DVI improvements. An auto delete feature is added to the recording capabilities, and multiple folders can now be selected for copy/move/delete.

Trailer Booking is added (both the?BBC and Channel 4 currently broadcast info for Trailer Booking) and SMS input is now supported. And finally, an option has been added to the installation wizard to allow for power saving in standby.

Naturally, as a pre-release beta, it's craggy and temperamental, but that won't be the case with the final build (which is due "very soon", Pocket-lint understands) and what 1.02.03 brings to the table is such a veritable feast that it elevates the Humax HD-Fox T2 some way above its Freeview HD set-top-box roots.
