Audi Union Type C gets e-tron treatment

Audi is to show off a prototype 1:2 scale Auto Union Type C car with electric drive, which can travel at over 18mph, at the Nuremberg Toy Fair next month.?

The news follows Audi's showing of the E-tron?Spyder at CES in Las Vegas earlier in January. The electric plug-in hybrid two-seater is equipped with a 221-kW (300-hp) twin-turbo V6 TDI at the rear axle and two electric motors, together producing a total of 64 kW at the front axle.

That car can accelerate to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 4.4 seconds, and top speed is electronically governed at 250 km/h (155.34 mph).

However, the new toy car won't be as powerful. Instead it features a 1.5PS electric motor and has a maximum range of 15 miles on just 2 hours of battery charge.

The electrically-propelled reworking of the thirties racing classic is a half-size model, based on the limited edition pedal car.

“Its electric motor develops a modest 1.5PS, and a top speed of 18mph. It may not be the sprightliest Audi ever made, but it can cover up to 15 miles on just two hours of battery charge from a standard 230V household socket," says Audi.

The body is hand-finished and made from aluminium and carbon-effect material, and at 2.32 metres long and 97cm wide, it’s just 1.12m shorter than the A1, which makes it suitable for children and thankfully adults up to 5ft 11in tall. ?

The 1.5PS electric motor drives the rear wheels, is charged by a lithium-ion battery and can develop as much as 60Nm (44.25 lb-ft) of torque for short periods. This enables the car to reach a top speed of more than 18mph (30 km/h). The Type C prototype is also equipped with reverse gear.

Annoyingly there are currently no plans to offer the Type C e-tron for sale in the UK.
