Hornby, maker of both Scalextric and its eponymous toy train line, has signed up with the London 2012 Olympics for a range of officially-licensed products in stores now and coming over the next few months.

Firstly, the company has created a specially branded train set, with the purple locomotive (Class 395) being suitably adorned with London 2012 logos and graphics. There's also a limited edition release, with a white version of the train, but that has already been snapped up by eager collectors and is sold out.

But it's the Scalextric set that is a unique proposition. While the brand has seen both motorcycles and motorcycles with sidecars, the Team GB Track Cycling Set will be the first time that you'll be able to race pedal-powered cycles. Obviously, they work on electricity in much the same way as their stable mates, but they're bound to be a different type of experience.

Unfortunately, the version exhibited at Toy Fair 2011 was just a mock up, so we didn't get to play or race, hence there's no review, but we definitely liked the build quality and design of the set. We do wonder quite how much enjoyment will be derived from a completely oval track, with no twists or turns, but as the figures are taller than a car, they'll take more getting used to.

Certainly, it makes for a change from the norm.

The Scalextric Team GB Track Cycling Set will cost ?74.99 and be available from all good toy stores and the Scalextric website?from summer 2011. It'll also be available to buy on the official London Olympics shop at www.london2012.com/shop.

The Class 395 London 2012 Train Set is around ?149.99 and available now.
