While it has seemed for quite some time now that Apple has little to no interest in the console or PC gaming markets, some code found in the third beta release of iOS 4.3 suggests the company may have changed its mind. This is quite likely due to the recent success the 2nd generation Apple TV has had in comparison to the 1st generation, which didn’t exactly do so well. Apple is apparently looking into taking advantage of this on a whole different level, as code snippets from iOS 4.3 beta 3 suggest the company may finally be entering the console gaming market.
The code snippets references things such as “ATVGames” and “ATVThunder,” which point to some sort of controller, along with other things you would expect from a gaming console: leaderboard support, multiplayer, and a store for game content (like the Marketplace on Xbox Live, for example). Two strings which seem to have brought a lot of attention are “com.apple.appletv.play.live.thunder” and “.play.archive.thunder,” as they are a clear indication that Apple must at least have something planned for the gaming on the Apple TV.
It would be quite interesting to see another console gaming competitor, and who better to take that spot than Apple? The company has been under suspicion of entering the gaming market for approximately the past two years through things such as patents that suggested support for gaming was even planned for the first generation Apple TV. Even though this has yet to happen, these new findings, along with those from the past, clearly point out that Apple is leaning in that direction. If and when it does happen, it will be a nice change to see less domination from Microsoft, Sony, and (to a lesser extent) Nintendo, and more competition will likely mean good news for consumers.
Only time will tell if Apple actually does pursue what these code snippets hint at. If they do, you will likely be reading more about findings like these in the near future.
