Keeping your iOS apps on your Mac is a good way to clear up space if you want a bonanza of music or a few movies on your iDevice for a long trip. It also gives you the chance to try out different apps without having six screens of icons and folders. You simply sync the device in iTunes, then you can delete unwanted apps from the phone, for the time being to clear up some space. The next time you sync, you should see your apps restored to their former locations on your iDevice, ready to be used. Your saved games should even be there as well.
Here’s all you have to do:
- Plug your iDevice to your Mac. If iTunes does not automatically open for you, then open it now.
- Once your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad shows up in the left sidebar of iTunes, click on its icon.
- Towards the top you should see a tab labeled “Apps.” Click it.
- “Sync Apps” should be checked, then click on the “Sync” button at the bottom right. This will make sure that all new apps on your iDevice are transferred to the computer.
- After the sync is done, you can disconnect the iDevice and remove the unwanted apps from it by holding your finger on an app icon until all the icons start to shake. You can then delete them by tapping the “X” on the icon. When you’re done, hit the home button to stop the shaking.
Now there other and easier ways to manage your iDevice apps, so why do this? Because when you want the apps back, you simply plug the iDevice back into your computer and hit sync. They’re all still checked in iTunes, so everything ends up right back where it was. Simple as that.
