Here’s a little context for Streets of Rage 2, the classic Sega Genesis game now available on iOS. In the ‘80s, you could not go wrong with the idea that our streets were about to be overwhelmed by gangs of Mohawked, drug-addled mutants who were just going to walk the streets (back and forth) waiting to make our kids into addicts and hassle our womenfolk. There were only two solutions to this problem which was going to happen any minute now. One was First Lady Nancy Reagan’s “Just Say No” program. The other was the unbridled vigilantism of bad dudes who weren’t going to play by the rules, but were going to take back the streets. This was, like, every other movie and video game in the ‘80s.
Streets of Rage 2 is a side-scrolling brawler that features two very bad dudes battling their way through the crime syndicate of “Mr. X,” who, despite having been defeated in the original game, has returned (shock!) without anyone learning his name (huh). Players will battle their way through gangs of colorful thugs and level bosses using kicks, punches, special moves, and, most of all, heart.
Streets of Rage 2 is available now on the app store for $2.99. Players with 3rd generation iPod touch and iPhone and iOS 3+ can also do multiplayer over bluetooth. And if you want to get really old school, you can play the original Japanese version, Bare Knuckle II, by changing the language option. Fighto!
