MWC 2011: Android and Windows machines
Acer is really dragging out its Iconia tablet releases. We first heard wind of them courtesy of an Acer event back in November, then they were teased over at CES, and now over at Mobile World Congress three of the devices have finally been detailed - the Iconia Tab A500, A100 and W500.
The A500 and A100 are basically the same machine, but in two different sized varieties - the A500 has a 10.1-inch display and the the A100 a 7-inch one. The A500 also has more RAM at 1GB, and 16 and 32GB storage options - the A100 has 512MB of RAM and has 8GB of storage.
Both will be packing Android 3.0 on launch (although our pictures show them running Froyo at the moment) and these are Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core powered devices.
They have HDMI out options for 1080p playback and on board they are said to be more than capable of handling "premium HD arcade games and complex online 3D games", as well as Flash 10.1 playback too.
Connectivity is via Wi-Fi, 3G and Bluetooth 2.1 and they also tap into Acer's clear.fi media sharing platform as well. They have 5-megapixel cameras on the back and 2-megapixel ones on the front.
Due out in April, no prices have yet been confirmed for either of these Honeycomb tabs.
Acer has also announced a 10.1-inch (1280x800) Windows 7 tablet - the Iconia Tab W500 - which comes packing an AMD C-50 processor, AMD Radeon HD6250 graphics and up to 2GB of DDR3 RAM, with a 32GB SSD.
The W500 has Dolby optimised audio and connectivity options including? Wi-Fi, 3G (on selected models) and Bluetooth 3.0. It also has a 1.3-megapixel webcam.
What makes the W500 a bit different though is that it comes with a full-size chiclet keyboard that doubles as a docking station and features the Acer FineTrack pointing device with two buttons, an Ethernet port and a USB port for external devices. So it's another netbook/hybrid effort for the pile.
No release details for the W500 have been given as of yet, but we'll keep you posted.
