F-Secure named Windows antivirus product of the year by AV-Comparatives

AV-Comparatives spends all year evaluating antivirus applications, and their recommendations are always worth paying attention to. The company's 2010 summary report has been posted, and F-Secure has been declared the top Windows antivirus program.

AV-Comparatives also states that it was extremely difficult to choose a winner this year -- which is a good thing, because it means that security software vendors are stepping up their game. Several programs posted very strong results in 2010. Both Avira and F-Secure had advanced+ ratings across the board, and Symantec's Norton Antivirus 2011 missed a perfect chart by a single category. F-Secure also registered the least false positives, and tied with Norton for detection of previously unknown malware -- a critical metric with today's rapidly-changing threat landscape.

F-Secure was ultimately chosen as the winner because it "had made the most progress relative to last year." AV-Comparatives used that criteria as the tie-breaker in order to "motivate all manufacturers to keep improving their products."
