Many iDevice owners choose to jailbreak for various reasons, mostly for benefits that Apple doesn’t want them to have or know about. An estimated one in ten iPhones is jailbroken, and although this statistic is quite low, there are reasons for it. Many people are afraid of jailbreaking their iDevices out of fear of security issues, bricking, legal issues, and so forth. On top of that, Apple is very vigilant against jailbreaking, attempting to combat it with every new iDevice and iOS release to date, even though jailbreaking had been declared a legal exemption under the United States’ DMCA last summer.
Jay Freeman (aka saurik), the creator of Cydia, which is an alternative to Apple’s App Store for jailbroken iDevices, sat down with Robert Scoble at the Mobile Connections conference where they recorded a video in which Freeman talked about the benefits of jailbreaking your iDevice, which you can watch below. He goes into quite some detail on the various iOS tweaks available in Cydia and the Cydia Store where paid content resides, as well as applications which have (or would have) been rejected from Apple’s heavily regulated App Store.
If you don’t know much about the jailbreaking scene, educate yourself by watching the video below. Perhaps it will persuade you to take that extra step to free your iDevice from all of Apple’s restrictions.
