Official word from top dog
HTC modders rejoice for your prayers have been answered by the lord himself.
No, not by God - but by Peter Chou, CEO of HTC, who has confirmed via the medium of Zuckerberg that HTC will be unlocking the bootloaders on the company's phones.
The move comes after HTC decided to shut up the bootloading shop, making modding and rooting devices very difficult, on some of its handsets following pressure from the networks who were scared of the tethering options it offers. It was a move that didn't sit well with the HTC community.
But, fair play to HTC - it has listened to its audience and Chou released a statement saying:
"There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we've listened. Today, I'm confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience."
Even though rooting is now therefore more available then, be aware that there are still some negative consequences to modding your HTC device - a lack of OTA updates for a start. So be sure to check out some of the many rooting forums before messing with your phone's systems.
Still, it's nice to have the option....(Are you reading this Cupertino?)
